Four Eyes! Drawing Lab Unit 2 lab 12

I'm having such a great time with the Drawing Lab book and Workshop. Having time to do assignments and share them with others is so much fun!

I have been learning things about my self. I never really understood why I don't like charcoal as a medium. I have now figured it out.

There are 3   things about charcoal that bother me: gritty feeling on my fingers, too smudgy on the paper and the skritchy sound/feeling when actually drawing with it.

I have tried using the charcoal pencils to remove some of the gritty feelin on the fingers but alas...I still end up with charcoal on my hands.  I'm not the most tidy person while making art. :)

Have you found materials that you LOVE or Hate to do art with? What are they??

Remember to get out and do something creative today!
Cheers,
SB

I think your eyes are great!!! I hate charcoal so much that I won't even buy any. I might see of there is a tiny piece in the bottom of the BBQ pit, but I hate it on my hands. You can "fix" it with hairspray though. I just hate it personally.

I love the way charcoal looks but it is messy. I find I work better with thinner lines and charcoal is always so fat. I love my Caran D'arch water soluable crayons. Just love them! I'm pining for a set of Copic markers but even on Dick Blick a set can cost around $300. Yikes! I'll stick with my Staedtlers- much cheaper and the fine line ones work great. I broke out my Winsor-Newton watercolors to make imaginary creatures and I liked working with them. I don't really "get" watercolors but I want to learn.

I like your eyes. I'll be working on that one this weekend. This workshop is really fun!

I'm really liking the eyes and I also find charcoal way too messy. I thought it was just me!

I have a really hard time getting eyes to be the same size, too.

I think I'll have to try that exercise this weekend, too.

I really love the way you describe your feelings about charcoal. You've put into words things I've thought but never really expressed. I agree!! (I might just try the charcoal too, to see how I do with it.)

The eyes are awesome, the charcole I agree with 10000%. I think we should work with the tools we like and that is exactly what I do. I will try things out, but in the end will do most of my art with supplies I love.

I have the same trouble using charcoal--and pastels. So messy! I get it everywhere. I, also, prefer finer lines. More control, I guess--for my OCD tendencies. ;)

Wow! Fabulous and so realistic...I love the color one, it's a mix of colors, very cool. I have to say I have a love hate relationship with materials...I haven't really found anything I love love...maybe I'm not there yet!

Thank you all!

I appreciate your comments about the actual drawings of the eyes. I also now see that I'm not alone in my aversion to charcoal. :) I hope you all have a great FRiday.

Im not a big fan of charcoal either but I like pastels. The smudges become intentional.

I know nothing about charcoal so can't comment on that, but I LOVE your eyes! Each one of them is fantastic - your shading, colouring and the appearance of reflection of light are wonderful.

Nice eyes. I think eyes are my favorite thing to draw and paint. I wish people had more of them...

I actually like charcoal for its smudginess. I have a hard time making art with mediums I can't smudge.
