We were going to sketch but started chatting about this that and the other and all of a sudden 2 hours had passed and I had to get home. Carol is a very charming lady with a lot of talent and the gift of making friends really fast! I hope to get together with her again some time!

Here's the pen and ink drawing with watercolor pencil wash. I was so excited to see this one come together . The colors worked and the pen work is looser than I usually do.

I hope you have a productive and enjoyable time in your next artistic endevor!

2nd try watercolor postcard marbles

So, today looks like a day of doing things again. this is my second go at the marbles.

This time I went for a lighter and brighter effect. I think it works except that line around the biggest marble. All done with Prismacolor Watercolor Pencils on 140# watercolor paper.

There will be a 3rd time and hopefully I'll get it right next time.

What do you think? Is it better, worse or just different??
let me know!

I didn't do any real blending of the lines just some sketchy shading and accidental smudges. it was done pretty fast (for me) about 20 minsand was drawn from a photo of me that my husband took from last spring (07).

The only way I'm gong to get any better is to keep trying and working at it. BUT I want it to look like me NOW! sigh...

Monday Monday I loved this day....

Yeah, even after going to the dentist I love this day. Hey mom, look no cavities. Just my regular cleaning and I'm on my way.

I got several uninterrupted hours and was able to get this drawing finished that I satrted lat night.

I really like how is feels substantial and very stone like. Though I am thinking of maybe do a bit of a color was on it, I haven't decided yet so here it is: A Border Abby Scotland, I can't rememer which one since we saw several abbys in just a few days and it was 10 years ago.

It was drawn almost completely by stippling with an XS Pitt pen on 140 # watercolor paper. It's not very big only 4.25 x 5.5 inches so even though it looks really involved it is small. :)

I'm thinking of doing a bit of a series based on doors and windows. I love the idea of entrances, exits and ways to seen into or out of a place.

Cheers to you all!

Sunday show and tell

watercolor portals 1

Good afternoon,

This morning I took out another photo from WetCanvas.com. I'm still learning what the different watercolor pencils can do. Playing with light tand shadows too. This doorway is in an old church cloister. I don't know what country it is in as the photo didn't say.

I did a quick pencil sketch to get the basic shapes and then started in with the colored pencils. The photo was 'really dark' except for the open door and the outside. I HAD to put in a bit of the other door. :)

This was mostly done with Graphitint pencils with a bit of prismacolor watercolor pencil for the yellows. This is small only 5.5 x 4.25 inhes on 140# watercolor paper.

As always any constructive comments greatly appreciated! thanks for looking and letting me know what you think. :)

Thanks Rachel for the suggestion of darkening the shadows! I think it is much better now.

have a lovely Sunday!

Steping out and trying something new!

watercolor marbles

I found the coolest photo of marbles on WetCanvas. The light coming through and all the reflections was just too inviting. I had to try it! (and it fits EDM challenge 61-draw a grouping of 2 or more objects!)

I pulled out the Prismacolor watercolor pencils, the Inktense and Graphitint pencils and went to work. I did this in about 2 hours of futzing and putzing. I'm not totally satisfied. Some of it actually worked but parts I over worked and started turning to mud and not getting the right colors.

I'm still figuring out how to use all the watercolor pencils and not using any ink. This was really hard for me. I'm going to try doing it again and see what I end up with.

Any constructive comments most gratefully accepted. :)

Hope you have a great Friday evening!

I did it! My own portrait

I actually did a pencil sketch of myself.

I'm working on portraits after several years. This is the first time I have tried to do one of myself. I like most of it but the eyes are really problematic for me. In the photo I'm looking toward the sun and sort of squinting 1 eye more than the other.

(I actually cheated a bit on this as I had a photo that I played with the brightness and contrast, then I printed it out and traced it to get the eyes mouth and nose in the right places.) I want to learn how to see where all the parts go with out any crutches.

I will get better as I practice more. :)

I hope you have a great evening!

It is cool outside and I love it!!

It's a lovely cool day and I'm feeling really inspired to do some more images. It's so nice to put on a sweater and sit on the front porch. I enjoy these times much more than the really warm days of summer huddled in the house with the Air Conditioner.

I got a drawing done from the Drawings from Other Members Photographs DFOMP-5 and it also goes for Everyday Matters EDM 43! so I'm pretty excited to have those completed!

I'm having fun learning how the Inktense pencils work. They are different than regular watercolor pencils but very simialr too. I really like being able to color, get it wet and then not have the color move after if I want to add more colors. I'm also figuring out how to blend the inktense pencils. I'll get better as I learn more.

Thanks for looking!
have a great day, cheers! SB

Tuesday and flowers!

I got the flowers finished that I started yesterday! Wahoo!
these are for EDM 76 draw some flowers. I really had fun with these. I inked the stems and leaves then prismacolored every thing. :) Lots of layering of the colors to get them 'right'.

I figured that by not inking the petals I would keep them softer and more petal like. Do you think it worked?

I am really enjoying using color pencils again. It has been a few years since I really used them. I feel like I have way more control over them than the watercolors at this time. That's why I'm really looking forward to Cathy Johnson's CD watercolor pencil magic lessons. I'm hoping to learn how to have more control with them when they get water.

But until then, I'll have fun with my Not soluable pencils and blend and burnish to my little heart's content!

Two EDM Challenges today! 24 and 91

It was beautiful today, soft summer sun, 75 degrees and an easy breeze to keep the air moving. It was perfect to go in the yard and sketch!

I actually got 3 sketches done, the blueberries and the apple along with some lovely flowers that I'm still working on. I inked the apple and the branch then colored it with Prismacolor Pencils. The Blueberries were done with just the color pencils over a light graphite pencil sketch.

So the blueberries are EDM 24 draw a piece of fruit and the apple is EDM 91 draw an apple.

Both of these could have been the challenge of draw something summer because daring to my sisters and cousins to eat little green apples was one of the silly childhood games we played as soon as the apples were bigger than plums! Oh the puckered faces we would make!

And well, blueberries were always a summer fruit! we'd get to have fresh blueberry pancakes, and muffins then freeze a bunch for winter to have little sparks of summer in the darker parts of the year.

I hope that you have some tasty memories of summers past to carry along with you too!

Sometimes a doodle turns into a snail...

I sat down after a nice walk with my husband to do a bit of doodling. I got out my white card and pen and started laying down my string.

Little did I know at the time that string didn't want to be a doodle. It wanted to be a snail. With just a couple added lines the snail came crawling out and said I need a reason for hanging here with my head down. A rock magically appeared and all was well.

Silly I know. Not correct as far as a 'real' snail would look but, well, It came from my imagination.

Sometimes the pen knows what it's going to draw and I just hang on for the ride and see where it takes me!

Hope you have a great ride in store for you too!

Sunday show and tell EDM 66

Today's show and tell is a Fire hydrant from a photo I took in Illwaco Washington near Black Lake.

It was so cool, all the peeling paint showing layers of different colors. I wonder how many years it has been quietly doing it's job?

It was done in watercolor pencils, inktense pencils and pen on 140# wc paper. I should have stopped a little sooner with the pen as I think it shows up too starkly. (I may do some more work to tone that down but all in all it's a pretty good image I think).

After all the awesome comments I have decided that I had better just leave --Well Enough Alone-- The piece if finished and I won't mess with it anymore. :)

I hope you are enjoying your Sunday!

Drawing from Memory edm 173

What a lovely Saturday!

It was overcast this morning which kept it cooler than the forcast, even though it did clear out and get sunny and 75 degrees. Perfect!

I decided to try out a Derwent Spectrum Blue Watercolour pencil (that came free with my new set of Inktense pencils) on a quick sketch from my imagination of a girl's face and head. It came out sort of neat. I like the varitations of blues from the one pencil since I did wet parts of the drawing. My proportions are a bit off and the eyes look like flat disks not orbs, but part of that is not knowing how the pencil and water were going to react.

Any helpful suggestions are more than welcome! I have already ordered Cathy Johnson's Watercolor Pencil Magic cd and I'm on pins and needles waitning for it to get here! (of course I just ordered it today and it's going to take about a week to get here!)

I hope you all are finding something creative to do today!

I went to the Provecho Mexican Grill in downtown Vancouver for lunch today. It was someplace that I hadn't been before and I wanted to try them out. Yummy soft corn tacos with grilled chicken and a beef one. Oh yes! I'll be going back again.

So, while I was waiting for my order I started drawing the hanging light. I though it was kinda cool and funky with it's 3 different glass globes covering the light bulbs.

I will say that this was a big challenge. I only got 2 branches of the light done when my food came. I stopped, charged up my batteries with yummy food, when the plate was cleared I finished up the drawing.

I'm working on perspective, it's pretty good but parts are twisted funny and somehow I added a piece the the front and center branch that's not on any of the others. Weird...

Oh well, it was fun and I'm getting more comfortable drawing in public. Two of the workers even came by and looked at some of my stuff. One of them is an artist and he had a few of his images on his phone that he shared too. :)

If you want please let me know what you think!

So many colors!

edm 180 color inktense sample orange
There's an old song by Harry Chapin that goes:

"There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun,
So many colors in the flower
and I see every one"

I feel like that. So many colors, and I don't want to have to choose just one!

Even when we look at something like an orange. If I just draw an orange colored circle on the page, it would just look like a big polka dot! You have to add some red, and maybe some burnt umber and then a bit of a sunny yellow and may be even a touch of blue to make it LOOK like an orange.

What do you think? Can you imagine a world where every thing was just crayon box flat colors with no mixing allowed? I don't think it would very fun. There'd be no place for subtle variations, or gradations of tone. Hum...something to think about...

I'm pretty excited that I took it from just an idea to a completed project in just one day. I am so impatient that I have to be able to do a project from start to finish in one day.

Well, unless it's a big quilt project and then it can take a couple days to piece the top and then another to machine quilt it but that's another story!

Are you the impatient type or the kind that can start and then let it sit for a couple days and come back to finish?

Just to give you a smile!

EDM 80 something that makes you happy Girl with rooster statue at Powis Castle, Wales UK Gillian Mowbray photographer.

Gillian Mowbray of The Fading Rose was so gracious to give me permission to use one of her photos of a statue as the model for a drawing. This is the pencil sketch that I did this evening. I'll probably do a pen sketch of it too at some point. I need LOTS of work on my faces.

This statue makes me smile. It makes me think of the joy of being a child and not worrying if the bird is going to poop on my head.

I miss those days...

I am so happy to be able to get out and draw! I'm sure that when the rains start I'll be just as happy to stay home or indoors at coffee shops and such but right now, the warm air (only 74 degrees) and soft breezes beckons!

I hope that all ofyou are finding something to be happy about today and that you get the chance to exercise your creative souls.

My sleepy Westie

It's been really warm and when you have to wear a fur coat all the time you enjoy a nice snooze on the couch with your favorite blankie and the air conditioner gently blowing on you.

As someone else on EDM mentioned when the dog is sleeping don't bother him. Draw him! so I did a quick pen sketch of Winston all curled up with his blanket. Looks pretty much like him I am surprised to say! My husband even said that I captured him! :)

have a lovely evening!

Happy Tuesday!

Bright and sunny again today. I got out went to the college to pick up some art supplies and scones at the awesome bakery at the college! Yum! Then to the school I work at to set up some equipment for a gal in our business office since she will be back in the building a couple days before me. With that done I got to go out to Peet's Coffee and pick up my whole beans, a drink and a chance to draw.

First I drew a picture of my back pack to get warmed up then somethng a bit more ambitious! the wall across from me in the coffee shop. 1. I have only been drawing in public a few times and this time there was actually someone(a total stranger) fairly near as I drew. I was just a teensy bit self consious at first but then I got 'IN TO' the drawing and everything else went away.

Let me know what you think of them if you want.
I hope you are having a great day too!

Sometimes we would find string and make button spinners that wizzed and twisted the string. I loved that jar of buttons.

You can see I tried to draw some buttons. I think I sort of succeded but I'm not sure. I really liked the pencil sketch but after inking it I think I did too much in some areas and maybe not enough in others. I do like the highlights on some of the buttons.

What do you think? Do you have any great button memories??

I decided that I want to try doing a portrait again, So I'm going to go sign up at the portrait party site and see if I can find someone willing to play with me. In the spirit that I has been 8 years since I last drew a portrait I'm going to start doing the parts of the face challenges over at Everyday Matters group (EDM). I need to brush up on those skills.

Here is a pencil sketch of an eye. you know, it's not that hard to do just 1 eye. I need to practice making pairs of them! To get the size nd balance correct. It's so true that other stuff can be wrong in a portrait but as long as the eyes are 'Right" it will still look like the person. At least that's what I have found for myself. What do you think?

Sunday Show and tell...EDM #11 and 162

My darling husband and I started our day with a quick bike ride to one of our local fast food places Burgerville. We had lovely Breakfast Bagel Sandwiches. Mine had egg and sausage. I of course had to get strawberry jam to put on it. :) I did my quick sketch after the sandwich was all gone so this is all from my yummy memory.

We go out to the bikes and get ready to leave when Mark sees the innertube of his back tire bulging out. Yikes! Luckily we have the tire pump with us, so, he releases the air, gets the tube back in place and pumps it back up. Thanks goodness I brought my small pack with my drawing supplies or we wouldn't have been carrying the pump!

To home and my next image READERS drawing my glasses. I actually drew this up last night at 12:30 am but I wasn't going to scan it then. But here it is now:

These are el cheapo glasses! only 1x power since I don't need too strong..yet...I never even work glasses until this year. My 44th! Keeping track of them is a challenge. I have a pair at work on my desk a pair in the car and a pair I keep in my art kit. Not pretty but they work.

Finally is my doodle that I did after we got back from breakfast and the ride.It started with rectangles that were sort of floating in the air, then the teacup got put in the middle upside down then the saucer to hold everything up. Finally I filled up spaces with doodles, made the top one have a flap and a tie to keep it closed and I was done!

I have had a creative day and it's just gone 2 in the afternoon! I wonder what else I can get up to?

SAturday night and another Challenge down! edm 69 draw a beverage

In the process of not being so critical of my art. I give you the wonky water bottle.

I love how the cap turned out but the bottle it's self is sort of twisted. I posted it anyway because what I was really working on was trying to show the transparant plastic of the bottle. I did the whole thing start to finish with a Pitt Extra Fine. Again my biggest challenge is not being able to go back and refine the drawing, getting the kinks out! I'm learning though and that's the whole point of these challenges right?

This water bottle or one like it is my constant companion during the hot days of summer! I could probably float away on the amount of water I drink on somedays. I know that many people figure that as long as they are drinking something they are staying hydrated. For me I like that water is zero calories, nothing artifical and if I really want flavor I can drop some lemon in.

So, during the heat folks, drink your water and stay healthy!

Saturday afternoon and I got something done! EDM #112

Well, it is a hot sunny, breezy Saturday and I knew that I had stuff around the house to get done. Mundane life certainly can get in the way of being creative sometimes.

The kitchen has been super cleaned--even the table top UNDER the coffeepot and the coffee machine too. Dishes are done and my table near the easy chair has been decluttered, I can actually set stuff down again!

I was feeling a bit low this morning so My Hubby decided to cut me some roses from the front garden. I figured that you couldn't get fresher than flowers that were just picked. I decided that that would be my challeng for the day. I have a long way to on my drawings but I fugure the only way to get better is to just sit down and draw! It was done with Pitt superfine pen, Prismacolors on smooth flat 125 lb cover stock (similar to bristol board)

I have noticed that I expect my drawings to be 'wonderful' the very first time I sit sown to work on them. Why do we put such High Expectations on ourselves when we would never expect someone else to be able to be perfect from the get go?

till later! Cheers SB

Friday Morning Sketch Challenge EDM 52

Draw your dog.

HUm...Trying to draw a terrier is a challenge in more ways than one. He's got loads of energy in the morning, gotta check out all the new sights, sounds and smells that have occured overnight!

I started drawing him with his head up then he stands up turns around and lays down the opposite direction with his head on his paws. Sigh, so I started again. This time I caught him before he jumped up and started barking at the birds outside the window.

Yes, this is the infamous Winston of the broccoli story yesterday. He really is a love and a cuddler and I wouldn't trade him for any other kind of dog in the world. :)

Before it gets too warm I think we'll have just enough time for a walk and maybe some sketching time in the back yard...

happy Friday! cheers, SB

Welcome to my evening sketch! edm #23 draw your foot 071008

Today was way cooler only 72 degrees but bright blue skies and a cool breeze al day. Didn't have to run the air conditioner!! Woohoo!

It was a day to have a foot covering on in the evening so, while drawing my foot I had my socks on so they ended up in the drawing too.

I'll draw my naked foot another time when it is warmer. Hum...tomorrow is going to be almost 90 degrees. I may just do the challenge again tomorrow...

Till then, cheers! SB

Morning sunshine out my window EDM #18

Good Morning!

Today I chose to do the View out my Window EDM challenge #18. The morning sun was shining and it is still cool out. I have the curtains open and the breeze blowing through the house. the picture I drew today shows our rescued broccoli plant front and center, the railing of the porch and the assored greens beyond, including our ginormous rambling rose bush!

Okay, when I say rescued broccoli plant here's the story...

My dog Winston the Westie LOVES broccoli. When ever he hears the freezer door open he runs to the kitchen the see if it is BROCCOLI. He will do any number of tricks for one little frozen chunk of that veggie. Now, we didn't even realize that he would bother the broccoli plants in the pots in the yard. The merest thought of that never crosed our minds. So, one morning I walk outside and I see that something has been nibbling on the plant. I think, oh well, bunnies... and go on about my business. Later in the day I walk past the plant and more of it is gone, and I see Winston laying in the grass near the pot. I go take a seat in the shade and watch. No, he wasn't guarding the plant from maurading bunnies, he was keeping it all to himself! I watched him get up chomp another leaf and lay back down! Arrrgh! dratted dog! I swoop in and take the chomped on broccoli pot and all up to the porch and put it on a table out of doggy teeth reach and it has be happily recovering and now sending up a lovely broccoli head.

I hope you all have a lovely morning! Cheers, SB

Here's a quicky doodle I did this evening!

This evening as my husband was playing on the Wii--doing Mario Kart. I was inspired to doodle some leaves. do you see the influence of the game creeping in?
I know I will end up slowing down on the posting and that I'm in the honeymoon period but it's a lot of fun right now. Cheers! SB

Sunny Hot and a walk downtown

Yes the sun does shine in the Pacific Northwest.
We have a lovely bright blue sky, 5 mph breeze and 85 degrees today.

So, first I took Winston the Westie out for a quick walk in the neighborhood and then grabbed my stuff and set off for downtown Vancouver. It was lovely, walking, coming across shady spots and did I remember to say that I brought my camera with me? I got tons of lovely photos to use as reference for my drawings; nifty crusty bricks, peeling paint, old church and flowers galore! I even remembered to take photos of the old post office downtown and the Clark County Historical museum. More on those in another post.

I stopped at a funky restaurant called Mon Ami Cafe
and had a lovely Ham, Brie and Pear Crepe and an iced Latte for lunch. I even remembered to bring my drawing stuff so, I drew in public, some place I had never been to before and it was what I had for lunch! I think this will be for:

EDM #72 Draw some place new and what you find there.

I did this in ink, then used some watercolor pencils and my water brush. I really like how the salad turned out. It was a very yummy lunch too! This was all done in about 10 mins since I was hungry and the food looked so good!

Smarties! EDM#106

So, these Smarties were sitting on my table and I decided that they would fit the bill for the Draw something sour/tart challenge.

Pen and ink with a bit of color pencil. The challenge again was doing it with pen from the start and getting it to look like the candies were inside a celophane wrapper.

I sort of like how it turned out. I know I have a way to go though... maybe a bit more clear space on the ends and the top edge? I don't know. but hey, I did the drawing even with out knowing exactly what I was doing. :) Cheers! SB

2 posts in one day!

Well, I decided to try another EDM challenge.
This time it was #10 draw you own hand. I did it with just a pen without doing any pencil sketching before hand. That was really hard for me. I couldn't go back and move a line. So, the hand is a little wonky but not too bad I guess.

Deliberately Creative is born!

Welcome to the first post of this blog.
I hope to use it as a way to document my journey toward a more creative life.

I love the idea of a blog. I know that I can be funny, I know I can be sweet, I know I can be entertaining. But Can I do it in a digital manner? Will it come across with out my voice and silly expressions?

I'll be posting on a semi-regular basis. I figure if I don't promise to always do it I may actually keep it up to date. :)

Eventually, I will have lots of photos of my creative endevours and maybe a few recipes and tutorials too.

For now I have just joined the Everyday Matters group over on yahoo groups. It is a group of really creative people who have joined together to celebrate the creative life! This group is based on Danny Gregory's book Everyday Matters. I love the idea of the weekly challenge to draw something from your everyday life.

It was a challenge for me to do this with just a black pen. I didn't draw it first in pencil. I just jumped in and started drawing with the pen. I don't usually do that. Getting the shading to make it look like and onion was interesting too.

please let m know what you think!

Cheers! see ya next time. SB
